Eurosceptics in Germany: the Illusion of an Alternative

In this contribution to the ongoing TEPSA Explainers series, Katrin Böttger and Funda Tekin from the Institut fĂĽr Europäische Politik (IEP) take us through the history of Euroscepticism in Germany and the rise of the Alternative fĂĽr Deutschland party in recent years, expanding on questions of political messaging and historical critiques of European integration from various points on the political spectrum.

This TEPSA Explainer is released in conjunction with TEPSA’s coverage of the upcoming German Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and the upcoming German Pre-Presidency Conference, taking place on 25-26 June 2020.

This TEPSA Explainer is linked with the upcoming edition of the TEPSA Book “Euroscepticism and the Future of Europe: Views from the Capitals“, edited by Michael Kaeding, Johannes Pollak, and Paul Schmidt, in which one of the chapters focuses in on the topic of Euroscepticism in Germany.
