Frontiers of truth: Reclaiming liberal democracy in a post-factual world | RECLAIM Final Conference

Is liberal democracy under existential threat in the age of post-truth politics? In recent years, what feels true has too often outweighed what is true. Emotions and personal beliefs have been replacing facts, eroding trust in liberal democracy and its institutions.

The Horizon-Europe funded “RECLAIM – Reclaiming Liberal Democracy in the Postfactual Age” project has been at the forefront of understanding how post-truth politics is affecting democracy in Europe and how to confront this challenge. As this crucial project culminates, TEPSA organised the project’s final conference: “Frontiers of truth: Reclaiming liberal democracy in a postfactual world”. A forum to exchange narratives and provide recommendations to counter the impact of post-truth politics and safeguard the future of liberal democracy in Europe.

The event brought together experts, policy-makers, and journalists to discuss these issues through a variety of panel discussions on 27 June 2025 at the VBO-FEB (Rue Ravenstein 4, 1000 Brussels), and featured quickfire questions, live crisis-management scenarios, reverse panels, and a live recording of RECLAIM’s podcast “Post-truth be told”!

More about RECLAIM

Recent years have witnessed the emergence of a set of processes and phenomena that are frequently referred to as post-truth politics and which constitute a fundamental challenge, potentially even an existential threat, to liberal democracy as we have come to understand it. Under the title “Reclaiming Liberal Democracy in the Post-Factual Age” (RECLAIM), this project aims to study the implication of post-truth politics on the future of liberal democracy in Europe.
