Fragmented identities: what impact on everyday life?

Are there fundamental values that underpin liberal democracy? How are identity narratives weaponised against them? Do these narratives ever translate into real-life policy challenges? What new ways are there of fostering unity in the face of divisive rhetoric?

In this TEPSA Explainer in collaboration with the RECLAIM Project, Karolina Czerska-Shaw, Assistant Professor at the Institute of European Studies of the Jagiellonian University, explains the discursive and narrative aspects of how to reclaim liberal democracy in the post-factual age, through the prism of borders and identities.

Quality of information is crucial to the functioning of liberal democracy, and as part of the Horizon-funded “Reclaiming Liberal Democracy in the Post-Factual Age” (RECLAIM) project, a consortium of pan-European analysts and experts are investigating the impact of post-truth politics on liberal democracy in recent years, and looking for ways to mitigate it.
