TEPSA Academy & Skills Lab 2026: “European strategic autonomy” [Deadline Passed]

Recent geopolitical developments have led to the return of power politics and the fragmentation of multilateralism worldwide. With the transatlantic relationship under increasing pressure since the return of the Trump administration, Europe needs to learn how to shape its own future and maintain its position as a strong player on a global level.

The concept of European “strategic autonomy” has been seen as a condition for the European Union (EU)’s survival in this new world. However, what does the quest for strategic autonomy entail? How can the EU strengthen its defence, digital, and economic policies?

To gain insight into these developments and strengthen the skills necessary to have a true impact at the policy, societal, and academic levels, TEPSA is organising the TEPSA Academy & Skills Lab 2026 on the concept of “European strategic autonomy”, taking place in Brussels, from 22 to 26 June. Participants will have the chance to exchange perspectives with key stakeholders in this field and reflect on the challenges faced by the EU in the current political context, foster productive discussions, and create platforms for youth input into these important debates.

The Academy will be run by academic coordinator, Niklas Helwig, Leading Researcher at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA) and renowned expert in EU foreign and security policy.

By attending the Academy & Skills Lab, participants will:

  • Deepen their knowledge of EU strategic autonomy, gaining practical insights into policy-making;
  • Visit key institutions, meet with high-level professionals, and learn from their experiences;
  • Meet and exchange ideas with practitioners from institutions, think tanks, and academia;
  • Obtain new skills and meet other peers working in related fields.

Practical information

The TEPSA Academy & Skills Lab will take place in Brussels from Monday, 22 June to Friday, 26 June 2026. The first four days will feature a programme of expert lectures, panel debates, and visits to key EU institutions. Dedicated sessions for analysis and discussion within the group will take place throughout the week, with the goal of reflecting critically on the insights gained during lectures and meetings. The last day will be devoted to a hands-on skills training lab with an expert trainer. Full participation in all elements of the programme is compulsory. You will receive a certificate of attendance on the final day.

A draft agenda can be downloaded here.

The participation fee is EUR 400. Successful candidates will have one week to transfer the participation fee upon notification of their acceptance into the TEPSA Academy and Skills Lab. Failure to do so in time will result in exclusion. In case of non-participation, the fee cannot be refunded. Participants travelling from within the EU will receive a reimbursement for their travel and accommodation costs up to EUR 400 upon presentation of the original receipts and tickets.

How to apply?

The TEPSA Academies and Skills Labs are designed as interdisciplinary activities and are open to university students and recent graduates from different disciplines interested in learning more about European strategic autonomy. Participants are currently being selected by a review committee.

Applications were open to both EU and non-EU citizens, but only participants travelling from and to EU Member States will be eligible to receive a reimbursement of their travel expenses.
