Abstract
The death of Giulio Regeni in 2016 has opened a challenging rift in the relationship between the EU and Egypt. This brief argues that EU institutions such as the European Commission and the European External Action Service have adopted a pragmatic approach, balancing out the quest for truth and the need to uphold human rights standards with security and economic interests; while the European Parliament has prioritised values.
