This infographic is based on the chapter “Fugitive Truth: Renewing the Public Sphere in the Age of Post-Truth”, authored by RECLAIM’s researcher, Saul Newman. It showcases the role of progressive social movements in renewing the public sphere.

The preponderance of lies, mis/disinformation, “fake news”, and conspiracy theories has led to the fragmentation of the public sphere into echo chambers and filter bubbles – a situation deliberately promoted by right wing populist forces.

But, is this the end of the public sphere? No. Progressive social movements fighting for social, economic, and climate justice are transforming and renewing the public sphere. By using reason to question authority and encouraging the coming together of individuals, new radical movements are developing alternative forms of democratic deliberation.
