TEPSA Academy & Skills Lab 2025: “EU Equality and Anti-Discrimination Policy”

Recent years have seen the emergence of actors in Europe and worldwide who seek to curtail the enjoyment of fundamental rights for women, gender-diverse people and ethnic and religious minorities. The rise of radical and illiberal actors, part of the greater phenomenon of democratic decline across the globe, has triggered a backlash against diversity and inclusion that especially threatens communities that are already subject to discrimination and marginalisation.

Now more than ever, the European Union (EU) must stand strong in its value-based action, and the role of civil society in supporting these efforts while promoting EU accountability to these values is crucial.

To gain insight into these developments and strengthen the skills necessary to have true impact at the policy, societal, and academic levels, we organised the TEPSA Academy & Skills Lab 2025: “EU Equality and Anti-Discrimination Policy”. The TEPSA Academy & Skills Lab took place in Brussels on 2-6 June 2025. Participants have the chance to exchange perspectives with key stakeholders in this field and reflect on the challenges faced by the EU in the current political context, to foster productive discussions and create platforms for youth input into these important debates.

By attending this Academy, participants:

  • Acquired and deepened their knowledge of EU equality and anti-discrimination policies, gaining first-hand understanding of the intricacies of policy-making in Brussels;
  • Visited key institutions, met high-level professionals and learned from their experiences;
  • Met and exchanged views with students from different disciplinary and national backgrounds;
  • Accessed networking opportunities with high-level practitioners from EU institutions, academia, think tanks and civil society organisations;
  • Improved their analytical and argumentative skills;
  • Enhanced their employability.

Practical information

The TEPSA Academy and Skills Lab took place in Brussels from Monday 2 to Friday 6 June 2025. The first four days featured a programme of expert lectures, panel debates, and visits to key EU institutions. Dedicated sessions for analysis and discussion within the group took place throughout the week, with the goal of reflecting critically on the insights gained during lectures and meetings. The last day was devoted to a hands-on skills workshop with an expert trainer. Participants received a certificate of attendance on the final day.

Participants travelling from within the EU received a reimbursement for their travel and accommodation costs up to EUR 400 upon presentation of the original receipts and tickets.

Applications process

The TEPSA Academy and Skills Lab were designed as interdisciplinary activities and applications were open to university students and recent graduates from different disciplines interested in learning more about EU equality and anti-discrimination policy. Participants are currently being selected by a review committee.

Applications were open to both EU and non-EU citizens, but only participants travelling from and to EU Member States will be eligible to receive a reimbursement of their travel expenses.
