VIADUCT Annual Conference

The VIADUCT Annual Conference, scheduled for March 2020 and postponed due to COVID-19, will take place online on 22-23 October 2020.

The VIADUCT – Enhancing VIsibility of the Academic DialogUe on EU-Turkey CooperaTion Final Conference, organised by consortium partners TEPSA and CETEUS. The conference, entitled â€śBridge Over Troubled Water: Researching & Teaching EU-Turkey Relations”, and organised in the framework of the Erasmus+/Jean Monnet network â€śVIADUCT – Enhancing Visibility of the Academic Dialogue on EU-Turkey relations”, aimed at exploring innovative ways and new agendas for teaching and researching EU-Turkey relations.

As the VIADUCT project has entered its final year of implementation, the project partners and interested public will meet online to wrap up three years of successful cooperation and joint activities on teaching and researching EU-Turkey relations at the VIADUCT Third Annual Conference “Bridge over Troubled Water: Researching & Teaching EU-Turkey Relations”.

CONFERENCE PANEL ANNOUNCEMENTS

As we approach the start of the conference, we are pleased to announce participants on our panels, speakers, and other contributors to the VIADUCT Online Conference. More information will soon follow.

Angelina Eichhorst will be our keynote speaker at the conference. As Managing Director for Western Europe, Western Balkans, Turkey and United Kingdom at the European External Action Service, she will share with attendants her expertise on negotiating EU-Turkey relations and her first-hand experience in this field. Wolfgang Wessels, the Director of CETEUS and an EU-Turkey relations expert, will be introducing the keynote speech, which will be chaired by VIADUCT Director Funda Tekin.

The Policy Debate at the VIADUCT Online Conference will be on the topic of “Pouring Oil on Troubled Waters: Bridge-building in EU-Turkey Relations”. The panel will bring in expertise from across the analysis and policy-making community, including Bernard Brunet from the Turkey Unit of DG NEAR at the European Commission, Fuat Keyman from the Istanbul Policy Center, and Funda Tekin from Institut für Europäische Politik. The panel will be chaired by Elcano Royal Institute’s Ilke Toygür.

Turkey has long been described as a cornerstone in European and Transatlantic Security, but tensions rise: In the Eastern Mediterranean or in questions of defense structures, Turkey and the EU seem to be at crossroads. Discuss with Eduard Soler (Barcelona Centre for International Affairs) and NilgĂĽn Arısan (The Economic Research Foundation of Turkey) ways forward in Turkey-EU Security relations. The Working Group is chaired by Giorgos Kentas (University of Nicosia).

Are recent gas discoveries in the Black Sea an important step to Turkey’s strategic goal of becoming a regional gas hub? What role will energy play in future EU-Turkey energy relations? Ĺžuhnaz Yılmaz (Koç University) and Johannes Pollak (Webster Vienna Private University) discover the field with you, chaired by Karlis Bukovskis (Latvian Institute of International Affairs).

In 1961, Germany and Turkey signed their first labour recruitment agreement, which is considered a milestone in bilateral relations. How has migration shaped societies in the EU and Turkey, before and after? What impact has the “EU-Turkey statement” of 2016 on EU-Turkey relations? Ayhan Kaya (Bilgi University) and Senem Aydın DĂĽzgit (Sabancı University) take a closer look on one of the perhaps most debated questions in EU-Turkey relations, chaired by Selcen Ă–ner (BahçeĹźehir University).

In times of troubled waters in EU-Turkey relations, good teaching of this multifaceted relationship is essential. What matters in teaching EU-Turkey relations today? Chaired by Christine Neuhold (Maastricht University), Digdem Soyaltin-Colella, (AltınbaĹź University), who has published in VIADUCT’s Teaching Paper Series, and Darius Ribbe (Greifswald University) discuss theories and practices of teaching the next generation that will shape Turkey-EU relations.

Turkey is a special case in the EU’s enlargement history, but the EU faces great challenges at every corner: Brexit, rule of law, and now COVID-19: What does a future EU need to look like to face these multiple challenges? Barbara Lippert (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik) and Julie Smith (Cambridge University) analyse the situation, chaired by Ebru Turhan (Turkish-German University).

As the VIADUCT project has entered its final year of implementation, the project partners and interested public will meet in Brussels to wrap up three years of successful cooperation and joint activities on teaching and researching EU-Turkey relations at the VIADUCT Third Annual Conference “Bridge over Troubled Water”.

Co-organised by CETEUS and TEPSA, the conference will take place on 11-12 March 2020 in Brussels in the framework of the Third VIADUCT Week (09-13 March 2019).

The discussion will gather renowned scholars, think-tankers, policymakers, practitioners and civil society representatives from both Europe and Turkey, who will explore the current state and future outlook of the uneasy yet persisting relationship between the EU and Turkey.

Organised in the framework of the Erasmus+/Jean Monnet network â€śVIADUCT – Enhancing Visibility of the Academic Dialogue on EU-Turkey relations”, the conference aims at exploring innovative ways and new agendas for teaching and researching EU-Turkey relations. The roundtable discussion will be further complemented by a high-level keynote speech and the presentation of the VIADUCT Working Groups’ results, commented by political science scholars and legal academics. The event will also be an occasion to explore future projects, seminars, and broader research activities in this field.

VIADUCT was a project aiming at creating an academic network linking universities and think-tanks from the EU, Turkey and the neighbourhood to build knowledge on EU-Turkey Cooperation. Coordinated by Prof Wolfgang Wessels and Dr Funda Tekin at CETEUS, University of Cologne, the Jean Monnet Network VIADUCT was launched on 1st September 2017 and ran for a period of three years till 31st August 2020.
