Should the EU be tougher on disinformation?

Why have the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine been such pivotal moments for Europe? These events not only brought global disruption, but they also caused our digital spaces to be flooded with fake news. With false information on the vaccine and conspiracy theories on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine spreading at a unprecedented speed, we are now living in a true “infodemic”.

How can the EU combat this phenomenon? Should it continue to strengthen its regulatory efforts, or opt for a hard-power approach? Find the answer in our TEPSA Animated Explainer, based on the findings of the RECLAIM publication, “The European Approach to Online Disinformation: Geopolitical and Regulatory Dissonance“, written by Andreu Casero-RipollĂ©s, Jorge Tuñón and Luis Bouza-GarcĂa.

This Animated Explainer has been created in collaboration of the Horizon-funded “Reclaiming Liberal Democracy in the Post-Factual Age” (RECLAIM) project, which investigates the impact of post-truth politics on liberal democracy and looks for ways to mitigate it.
