As the spread of fake news and the rise of post-truth politics continue to threaten the public sphere and democratic deliberation, how can we defend European democracy?
Experts from our Horizon Europe-funded RECLAIM project propose three key recommendations:
- Priming politicians for post-truth by providing them with a toolkit on how to detect and respond to post-truth tropes;
- Countering foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI) by reinforcing the European External Action Service’s digital diplomacy capabilities and providing citizens with a clear definition of FIMI;
- Increasing visibility and coordination among Member States in the fight against disinformation.
This infographic showcases the recommendations put forward by RECLAIM authors in the following policy briefs:
- “Priming Politicians for Post-Truth”, authored by Ole Frahm (University of Iceland) with contributions by Karolina Czerska-Shaw and Maciej Stępka (Jagiellonian University)
- “Countering FIMI through Digital Diplomacy in Europe”, authored by Jonáš Syrovátka (Institute of International Relations Prague)
- “EU Defence of Democracy”, authored by Luis Bouza and Elena GarcĂa-Guitián
(Universidad AutĂłnoma de Madrid)
RECLAIM’s Policy Brief series aims to provide policy-makers with evidence-based recommendations to reinstate the legitimacy and effectiveness of liberal democracies.
